On January 6, 2025, the German Federal Solar Industry Association announced that Germany’s total installed solar capacity exceeded 100 gigawatts (GW) by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone. Solar power systems supplied 14% of Germany's electricity consumption in 2024, up from 12% in 2023.
The bulletin highlighted that Germany’s solar industry continued its strong growth in 2024, with over 1 million new solar power systems installed and an additional 17 GW of capacity added, reflecting a year-on-year increase of approximately 10%. The primary driver of this growth was the expansion of ground-mounted photovoltaic power stations, which contributed 6.3 GW of new capacity—a remarkable 40% increase compared to the previous year. The report also noted a slowdown in the installation of solar systems on residential rooftops, while systems on corporate rooftops and residential balconies saw rapid growth.
Looking ahead, Germany aims to meet at least 80% of its electricity consumption from renewable energy by 2030, with the total installed solar capacity needing to reach 215 GW. The head of the German Federal Solar Industry Association remarked, “If market growth continues at a similar pace over the next two years, we will be on track to achieve this goal.”
