Spain's total installed solar capacity reached 32 GW by the end of December 2024, following the addition of 6.46 GW of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity throughout the year.
According to Red Eléctrica de España, Spain installed 6.64 GW of new PV systems in 2024, marking a slight increase from 5.59 GW in 2023. This brings the country's cumulative installed PV capacity to 32 GW by the end of the year.
Public authorities approved construction permits for 727 renewable energy projects in 2024, representing a total capacity of 26,159.2 MW. Of this, 22,326.1 MW (or 85%) was allocated to solar projects, according to Foro Sella by Opina 360, the Social Research Institute of Grupo Redondo.
Over half of the approved renewable capacity is concentrated in three regions: Castile and León (5,580.4 MW), Aragon (4,585.4 MW), and Castile-La Mancha (4,389.4 MW). Castile and León led in PV construction authorizations with 4,815.7 MW, while Aragon led in wind energy approvals with 1,619.3 MW. Andalusia followed with 3,124.3 MW of approved capacity.
Madrid saw 2,265.8 MW of renewable projects approved, primarily large-scale PV systems, while the Valencian Community received approvals for 1,539.2 MW of solar plants. Catalonia had 1,194.3 MW authorized, ranking as the second-largest region for renewable energy authorizations. Cantabria was the only region where no renewable projects were granted approval in 2024.
Additionally, authorities approved 13 storage projects totaling 750.6 MW. Of these, 573.1 MW will come from a reversible pumped sewage treatment plant in León, 138.1 MW from standalone battery installations, and the remaining 34.9 MW and 4.5 MW from hybrid battery-solar projects and wind farms, respectively.
